Katy McCarthy moves to interim role at Ernst & Young
Internal communicator leaves Bank of Ireland to take on short-term contract positions.
Katy McCarthy has been working at professional services firm, Ernst
& Young, for the past month, as interim internal
communications manager within its UK practice.
Talking to the Hub earlier, McCarthy explained that she'd decided to leave her role as internal communications manager of business banking UK at Bank of Ireland, in order to take on some contract work.
I took on contract work as it allows me to build in more flexibility to my career.
"I took on contract work as it allows me to build in more flexibility to my career. I like to be challenged and as part of that I need regular new and fresh challenges," said McCarthy. "I was surprised at the amount of contract work there is out there."
Breathing life into a "Comms Community"
Prior to joining Bank of Ireland in 2006, McCarthy had been an internal
communications consultant to asset management organization, Morley
Fund Management. At Ernst & Young,
she's responsible for the internal communications activities in its
Risk Advisory and Business Advisory services. During her time with
Ernst & Young so far, she's been using
her experiences from both Bank of Ireland and Morley Fund
Management, to introduce new initiatives to the company – most recently,
starting up a "Comms
Community".
Katy's introduced new initiatives to the company – most recently, starting up a 'Comms Community'.
The Comms Community is basically a structured discussion forum whereby a team has been put together, including people who aren't necessarily managers, but who are aware of what's going on at their level and have the potential to be good communicators. "People have been really supportive of the idea and it works well as a tool to get people talking about what's going on in various areas of the business, helping to channel messages from the bottom up," said McCarthy.
