The impact of Christmas on internal communication
Christmas is nearly upon us, but how much has it affected your day-to-day responsibilities? Melcrum's recent poll demonstrates that perhaps the job of organizing seasonal festivities doesn't fall into internal communication's lap after all.
It's that time of year where office parties and celebrations take over the workplace and employees get the chance to let their hair down in the build up to holidays. Keeping in the spirit of Christmas, we asked in our recent poll on the Internal Comms Hub: "In the run up to the festive period, how much of your work-time is spent on entertainment-related activities for your organization?".
Seventy percent of respondents replied saying "very little", 9.1 percent said "not enough", 8.2 percent said "a fair proportion of my time", only 3.6 percent said "a high proportion" and 9.1 percent ticked the box marked for "other".
For those who answered that they did have Christmas-specific duties, the responsibilities ranged from "the creation of messages on diverse media for all the season-related activities including posters, stands, intranet and email" to "organizing the social club, kids and staff christmas parties."
Maybe this is a sign that internal communication, as a function, is moving away from the "party-planner" label and is now viewed as more of a serious and integral function.
The Internal Comms Hub will be breaking up for Christmas and New Year after the end of this week, with normal service resuming on 3rd January 2012.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Melcrum!
